Character History:

Personality:
Deryn Sharp wants to be a boy.

It is mentioned multiple times throughout the series that she would rather be born a boy. Part of this is because Deryn wants to fly and girls are forbidden to do so. Another part is because Deryn hates anything that is remotely girly. She has expressed unhappiness about the fact that her mother and aunts try to “force her into corsets and skirts.” Since the women of her family try to force her into being what she is not, she seems to have a better relationship with her father and brother because they support her in doing what she prefers such as flying and acting like a boy in general. This is evident throughout the series through her positive memories of them and actions such as wanting to hold Jaspert's hand when she's nervous.

Due to her childhood and her father and brother allowing her to act like a boy, Deryn sees both boys and girls as equals. It upsets her that boys are able to do certain things that girls are not, such as flying and swearing. She believes that she is just as good as, or sometimes even better, than boys at activities that are meant to be exclusive to them such as tying knots and reading sextants. On the trip to the proving grounds, she entertains such thoughts while observing fellow applicators on the bus, even thinking that none of them are as strong as her.

And when she is given the chance to finally do as she pleases, Deryn finds that being a boy is glorious. She loves every minute of it, from the lessons in flying to competing with the other Middies. Being on the Leviathan is the happiest Deryn's been since her father's death. She doesn't even seem to mind how exhausting it is acting like a boy at first though there isn't really much acting that she needs to do. Other characters have observed that she possesses the natural swagger of a boy and it is evident that a lot of her actions as Dylan come effortless to her. Dylan is brave, outgoing and rowdy. He is always quick to smile and is never malicious. These traits make give him an ability to befriend other easily (even if there is a language barrier, for example becoming friends with Alek’s men despite not knowing German). He loves joking around but when it comes to duty, he can very serious and determined.

Dylan is also well liked by the crew of the Leviathan. He is a fast learner and takes what he does seriously. When the Leviathan picks up Dr Barlow, he is one of two middies that is allowed to stay on board so it is obvious that others recognize his talent and ability. It is this that allows him to command soldiers who are much older than he is such as when he orders the other airmen when the ship is going down in the first book as well as when he tells the engineers what to do in the third. And it is also this that allows Dylan to lead his first command in Istanbul despite only serving in the Air Service for mere months. All in all, Dylan is the ideal soldier as stated by Alek.

Alek is Deryn's best friend but her relationship with him is very complicated. The two of them become very close almost immediately after they meet and Alek trusts her immensely, enough to tell her all his secrets. But he thinks that she is a boy. At first Deryn is enthusiastic about their friendship until she begins to develop romantic feelings for him. She hates that she loves him. All her life she tries to be avoid being a girl and yet Alek causes her to feel like “a village girl twisting her fists in her skirts whenever a certain boy walks by.” But his friendship is much too important to her and she tries not to do anything that might ruin it, such telling him that she is a girl. She does want to and comes close many times but in the end she does not because she is afraid he will dislike her if he ever learns the truth. So she keeps her secret to herself but she still feels guilty about not telling him because he tells her everything about himself.

Deryn is quite adept at hiding her secrets. Nobody on the Leviathan except Count Volger ever realizes that she is actually a girl and absolutely no one realizes her true feelings for Alek, least of all Alek. During their stay in Istanbul, the boy even jokes about Lilit developing a crush on ‘Dylan’, completely ignorant of how Deryn feels about him. Perhaps it is because of her dysphoria with her gender but Deryn is an extreme advocate of equality. She believes that girls can do anything boys can, and in some cases even better. Of course, if she sets her mind to it, usually Deryn will prove these thoughts correct. She also believes in equality in terms of race. She did not join the Service to fight and has shown on many occasions that she holds distaste for it. She has also expressed dismay that her crew treats Alek and his men badly just because Great Britain and Austria are at war despite everything they've done to help the ship (though of course this might just be because she has feelings for Alek).

Character Abilities you would like to expand on further:
Deryn is incredibly smart. She learns quickly and she thinks quickly. No matter the situation she can keep her cool and come up with effective solutions fast. This is proved many times throughout the books as Deryn is constantly being thrown into dangerous situations, from her airship being shot at to being boarded by revolutionaries.

Being a soldier, Deryn is very athletic. She doesn’t seem to tire easily despite everything that she does on the ship on quiet normal days or even when they are under attack. She knows her limits but is not afraid to stretch them. Everything she does has limited thought put into it but somehow, probably because she possesses a vast amount of luck, she somehow survives all of her rash decisions. She will jump from high places or even rush into protecting others without much thought for her own safety.

Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
Since Deryn’s father died in an air ballooning accident, the sight of things that resemble air balloons burning gives her nightmares for days, such as when Newkirk’s Huxley is burned by the German’s Tesla cannon. Her hero complex can also count as a weakness. She has the need to be the one who acts and because of that, constantly puts herself in danger, for example she takes shortcuts from one area of the ship to another by free-sliding down a rope on more than one occasion.

She is also quite a glutton. Alek has observed that she can usually be distracted with the sight of food.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What abilities will your character retain in Soul Campaign? Bullet-form is fine.
Since there is nothing superhuman and/or magical about Deryn, she will retain all of her canon abilities.

What weaknesses will your character lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Bullet-form is fine.
Nothing.

The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?
Deryn believes in doing the right thing and when she does something for a cause she believes in, she will put her entire heart into it. She will be disgruntled about suddenly being whisked away from her own world at first but she is understanding and will be completely willing to help the efforts of Death City. She will become a great asset, either by lending her strengths or by leading others.

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]
Why is your character a Meister and not a Weapon?

Deryn is a Meister. True, she’s a soldier, who are weapons in their own right, but when it comes to something that matters, she acts more like a commander. She is a natural leader and therefore more fitted in a role that will allow her to delegate others. She’s proven multiple times that she can lead (the captain of the Leviathan even gave her command of a mission that is essential to the British winning over the Ottomans despite the fact that she has only been in the Service for a few months.) The reasons for this is Deryn is very quick-witted and can keep her head in dire situations. Even when things seem their worst, she can almost instantaneously come up with a solution. Her belief in equality is another reason why she will make a good Meister. She will not abuse her position and will treat her partner as an equal.

What is your character’s Meister Ability? Why?
Manly Soul
